This is a submission for the WIB challenge. I am so tired. It's been so long that I've drawn anything for this fandom that it took forever for me to come up with a concept.
This started out with an idea of doing sort of an Amano thing with a tango theme. But then it sort of morphed into more of a Klimpt thing with a ballet theme. So there you go.
The background TOOK FOREVER AND MY HANDS HATE ME NOW.
Anyway, I think FFVIII would make an excellent ballet. In this part of the ballet, Rinoa has just dragged Squall onto the dance floor and he gets all emo and grumpy because he sucks at it. He's about to storm off, but she just waits. The music goes from kind of a stiff waltz to a more natural sounding orchestral score kind of deal. They turn at the same moment and then begin to dance -- it is beautiful. The most beautiful ballet dance inside your head you'll ever see.
If there are ballet people who are into FFVIII, if you make this a thing I will sincerely love you forever. This goes for cosplayers as well.

I’m sorry my feedback is coming so late; I feel as if I’m in an eternal game of playing catch-up. But I do it because I love the fandom and everyone one in it. You guys make it family.
All that sappiness aside, you have to know by now how much I love this. Even watching your progress through the incomplete stages, I had no doubt it would turn out simply beautiful. I’ve respect you as an artist for years and the pieces you’ve done for Somewhere in Between have been amazing. I think though, as much as I love those, this piece goes far beyond that. You’ve taken your skill to another level – what used to be simple (and simple doesn’t mean ‘simple’ by any means!) portraits/waist –up shots as evolved into two forms in motion.
I ove everything about it, from the color choice, to the striking details, to the smallest details – like the pointed toes. As a daughter of a dancer/gymnast that’s one of the first things that jumped out to me, along with the curvature in her wrist – it’s all deliberate and not just random hand placements. Again the background (love the Klimpt-esque approach) and color complement each other, working together; the dress is a stylistic take on the ballroom dress…and I like it better (let’s face it, it was a tad short *cough*) Her dress is a mixture of canon, ballet, and a hint of Latin ballroom.
Again, I can’t say enough about your art – but more than that as someone who’s been an encouraging member of the fandom – and to me personally in all my stories. This challenge wouldn’t have been the same without you. You are much loved (and much missed in some areas ~_^) Thank you again, you taking part mean s so much to me. There are certain people that fandom wouldn’t feel right without, you are definitely one of them. Thank you!
You're gonna make me cry!! I'm so glad you noticed those tiny details. As someone who has studied and had a great love of ballet (not to mention taking gymnastics for 3 years when I was a kid), getting it right was super important. The best work challenges you in a number of ways, and I'll admit this piece challenged the heck out of me. But it was worth it. Not just because I'm super proud of what I made but it was a nice chance to revisit my very fist fandom and my most favorite ship!
Even better, this piece is sort of a big thank you to all of my friends that I met through this fandom. Even though I'm not very active anymore, I still love you all and I wouldn't be here doing stuff if it wasn't for you all. <3
Yeah, I did a lot of research into ballet costumes, especially for men. There are costumes that have tights but there are also an equal amount that aren't tights. The only requirement would be that the dancer can move easily in them.
It was actually kind of a pain coming up with a look that would stay true to the original costume while looking enough like something you'd see in a real ballet -- for both characters.
I'm really glad it worked out. Squall in tights would be hilarious.
