Artist's Comments

"Hey," you ask, "you've drawn Juliet, Tybalt and Mercutio...but what about Romeo?"

Ah, screw him. He's a milk sop. Mercutio is where it's at. Incidently, he is my favorite Shakespearean character. After he dies, I totally lose interest.

Anyway, this is my concept art for Mercutio. Mergeing two things I love. Sarcastic Shakespearean architypes and white hair. Um. I put this one in digital because I did a lot more manipulation on it than the other two.

Like Tybalt, Mercutio has tattoos. I'm not a fan of them myself, but I made a creative decision to show Mercutio and Tybalt's differences through body art. Tybalt's tattoos are all very serious. They're tribal markings that have special meaning to him and his people. Whereas, Mercutio's are all spur of the moment and have little real meaning. They're less for clan bonding, like Tybalt's, and more for his own amusement. Hence the adorable Queen Mab tattoo on his right arm. (Which in my head, I like to think that Queen Mab is ALWAYS with him.) Note that the two you can see here are on his wrists, one of the more painful places to have tattooed. Tybalt's only visible tattoo on his drawing is on his neck, however he does have a lot more. In fact, his entire back is tattooed, as well as both arms which are all interconnected to form one large design. Unlike Tybalt, Mercutio has NO hidden tattoos. Only the two you see here. In his mind, if you can't see it, what's the point? He likes showing off. It's his way.

Anyhoot. I like the smirk on his face. I really had fun drawing this one. For a long time I've been trying to draw a male character that had slightly rounded thighs, that looked muscular, not feminine. For years I failed. FINALLY, I got it right with this drawing which is why I'll love it forever.

MMMMMMMMMMMM

That is all.

No, wait, there's more...

MMMMMMM

Mercutio is my favorite character in R&J, too. I know what you mean--he dies, and you're like, why bother watching/reading the rest?

You did him lovely justice here.

~drakonlily: alright, I'll say it. I missed your pretty boys.

~drakonlily to ~Sorda: Well, I may make you play your namesake, for the sake of her being your namesake.

Fuck yeah, I thought I was the only one who hated Romeo. :P Anyway, I love your design, again the skin is beautiful. I love his hair and his expression. And the Queen Mab tattoo is awesome.

 Thanks! I always find the secondary characters more interesing. I'm weird that way.

He's such a whiner. I hate Hamlet for the same reason. He just goes on and on, pewling about whether or not to kill his uncle. JUST DO IT ALREADY, YOU PONCE! GOD!!!

And you like the skin? I was worried I went to dark and the tat didn't look right. I didn't tinker with it all that long, I think in future drawings the Queen Mab tattoo is gonna be black and white. Or maybe not. I was just worried. I'm glad you liked it though...
